Water technology institute Wetsus joins Climate-KIC

Wetsus has recently joined the Climate-KIC as an affiliate partner. The Climate-KIC is one of the three Knowledge and Innovation Communities of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

Wetsus has the ambition to become European centre of excellence in the field of water treatment technology. Based at WaterCampus Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, Wetsus operates a demand driven research program, in which 45 research chairs from all over Europe cooperate. This results in breakthroughs that will lead to both increased global water availability and a strong position of the European water sector. The connection between the Climate-KIC and Wetsus will lead to enhanced European cooperation in the fields of education, innovation and entrepreneurship centred on Water Technology.

Wetsus shares the goals and objectives of the Climate-KIC. Europe is facing a significant innovation challenge, where despite an excellent research base, a strong know-how position, dynamic companies and creative talent, good ideas are too rarely turned into new products or services. Europe needs a change of mind-set towards the promotion of a more innovative and entrepreneurial culture.

Water technology innovation can deliver an important contribution to topics which are covered by the Climate-KIC: sustainable energy production (for instance Blue Energy), energy saving in water sector (for instance concentrated black water treatment) or mitigation of climate change (water scarcity and water quality).
