CirTec, a part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, has won the prestigious Lighthouse Award at the BlueTech Forum 2024 in Edinburgh. This award recognizes CirTec’s contribution to innovation and sustainability in the construction of the world’s first large-scale cellulose recovery plant.
The annual Lighthouse Awards recognize pioneers and visionaries who drive change in water technology. Collaboration was key to CirTec’s success, including their groundbreaking solution for recovering and reusing cellulose from sewage. CirTec’s commitment to bringing sustainable solutions to the market and improving water quality has set a new standard, continuing to help customers restore and close the water cycle and further #MissionWater.
The award ceremony took place in the Assembly Rooms in the heart of Edinburgh (Scotland), where industry influencers, decision-makers, and water professionals gathered to celebrate innovation. The jury acknowledged CirTec’s innovative approach and dedication to recovering resources from wastewater, saving energy, and reducing the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants.
First Large-Scale Cellulose Recovery Plant The construction of the world’s first large-scale cellulose recovery plant at Severn Trent’s Net Zero Hub wastewater treatment plant in Strongford (UK) is underway. This groundbreaking project aims to recover digestible residual streams and purify cellulose from the influent. The process involves re-treating the residual stream to produce biogas, drying, and sanitizing the cellulose to create a marketable intermediate product. This is a significant step forward in resource recovery and sustainability within the water treatment industry, made possible by close collaboration between CirTec, Severn Trent, AtkinsRealis, JN Bentley, and the Net Zero Hub project team to reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect the environment.
“We are incredibly pleased to receive the Lighthouse Award,” said Coos Wessels, CEO of CirTec. “This recognition reaffirms our commitment to pushing the boundaries of water technology and resource recovery, especially from sewage. The hard work and passion of our team have led to solutions that benefit communities and the environment.”
CirTec’s award-winning innovations include advanced wastewater treatment systems and sustainable designs. CirTec has recently joined Nijhuis Saur Industries, and their customers can now benefit from a complete portfolio of wastewater treatment systems. CirTec’s contribution aligns with the BlueTech theme of ‘Innovation in Action’.
As the water sector faces unprecedented challenges, CirTec remains committed to driving positive change. The awarding of the Lighthouse Award underscores their position as one of the leading companies in cellulose recovery in the sector. CirTec will continue to inspire others to create a more water-secure world as part of their #missionwater goal.
