Sustainable wastewater solution: Precision effluent dispersal for Silver Hill Duck in Ireland

In response to stringent environmental regulations, Bosta UK and Bevo International have developed the innovative Precision Effluent Dispersal (PED) system for sustainable wastewater discharge. The PED system, installed at the Silver Hill Duck processing plant in Ireland, enables the safe and efficient filtration and reuse of treated wastewater, meeting strict European Union regulations and setting a new standard for wastewater management in the poultry industry.

Adapting to environmental regulations with innovation

As European environmental legislation evolved under the European Communities Environmental Objectives (Surface Water) Regulations of 2009 and 2010, Silver Hill Duck, a premium duck producer, needed an alternative method for managing treated wastewater. The new regulations limited the discharge of effluent into streams, prompting the company to seek an alternative solution.

Silver Hill Duck turned to Bosta UK and Bevo International to design a system capable of dispersing treated wastewater safely on land. The resulting PED system filters the effluent and reuses it for irrigation purposes, minimising environmental impact while ensuring full compliance with regulations.

Pilot project success and full-scale rollout

In 2021, a pilot project was launched on a 1.6-hectare plot of land at Silver Hill Duck to test the PED system’s viability. The project successfully met the requirements set by Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), confirming the system’s ability to efficiently disperse treated wastewater while protecting the surrounding land and water sources.

Following the successful pilot, the PED system was expanded to cover 14.6 hectares, with full installation completed in July 2023. The system now ensures that Silver Hill Duck no longer discharges treated effluent into local streams, in full compliance with their EPA licence.
