Desalination project initiated on Virgin Islands

Elemental Water Maker is currently executing a solar energy driven reverse osmosis project on the Virgin Islands. The installation will provide 12.500 liters of fresh water from seawater on a daily basis, using only solar energy.

High electricity and water prices on the Virgin Islands, in combination with desalination being an energy intensive process, make EWM’s solar energy driven desalination a profitable alternative.foto Elemental water makers

Constant delivery without batteries
Elemental Water Makers has developed a smart water treatment technology which enables a constant reverse osmosis process, while running on fluctuating renewable energy only.

Batteries are avoided as they involve high investment costs versus a short lifetime in warmer climates, together with energy conversion losses and maintenance.

Removal of viruses and bacteria
In addition to removing salt, the Reverse Osmosis process removes all contaminants, such as viruses, bacteria, cysts, down to a size of 0.01 micron without requiring chemical treatment.

The reverse osmosis filtration technology is based on a multi-layer membrane which filters the water under high water pressure.

About Elemental Water Makers
Elemental Water Makers was founded in April 2012 by Sid Vollebregt and Reinoud Feenstra, two engineers of the Delft University of Technology.

The foundation of the company originates from a technological innovation which was designed, implemented and evaluated in the year before by the construction of a successful field pilot in Indonesia.
