Woudagemaal, Experience the cathedral of steam!
It is well known that the Netherlands is built below sea-level and that we use our dikes and pumps to keep our feet dry. The ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer, opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina, is the largest steam-driven pumping station in the world still in use. Even today the monumental pumping station ensures that the people of Fryslân keep their feet dry during high water. When that happens, the ‘cathedral of steam’ pumps up over four million liters of water per minute from the Frisian ‘boezem’ (drainage pool) into the IJsselmeer. Since 1998 the Woudagemaal is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
WaterCampus Leeuwarden
WaterCampus Leeuwarden is the physical core of the Dutch water technology sector and has the ambition to play a sector uniting role for the rest of Europe as well. WaterCampus stimulates cooperation between (inter)national businesses, knowledge institutes and governments within the water technology sector, in order to create synergy for world class innovation, education and entrepreneurship. This strengthens the global position of the European water technology sector. Additionally, WaterCampus offers a unique research infrastructure, and is a meeting point for scientists and companies from all over Europe.
You will visit the various facilities, such as the Water Application Centre and Wetsus research facilities. A lunch is served at Business Centre Johannes de Doper, also home of Water Alliance.
Waste Water Solutions of the future
Waste Water treatment is in transition and many new developments are investigated and implemented in The Netherlands. The WaterCampus innovation eco system has a lot to show in this respect. You will visit:
1. Demosite Antonius Hospital: In the world there is a growing concern about micro pollutants and medicine residues and considered as an emerging problem. Next to the Antonius hospital in the town of Sneek a demo site is realized where research can be carried out in a live situation on various waste water flows from this hospital. Entrepreneurs who are working on technologies to eliminate medicines and medicine residues from waste water of this origin can test and demonstrate their technology at this unique demo site.
2. Showcase ‘Waterschoon’: Today waste water is more and more considered as a source for energy and nutrients instead of only a “water to be wasted”. In this showcase we show the state of the art decentral solutions incorporated in a new build town expansion, Noorderhoek in Sneek. All new 220 new apartments are connected to this innovative waste water facility. Each house is equipped with vacuum toilets and kitchen waste grinders which creates a black water flow, which is digested. Biogas is reused for heating. Grey water is treated separately and valuable nutrients are recovered.
Blue Energy project at the Afsluitdijk
Sustainable energy production is a huge challenge in our world. Obtaining energy from environmental resources can play an important role in this regard. For example, electricity can be produced from advanced mixing of salt and fresh water in a process called reverse electro dialysis or blue energy. At the enclosure dike (in Dutch: Aflsuitdijk) a pilot is carried out with this Blue energy technology under live situation, where salt water from the Sea (Waddenzee) and fresh water from the lake (Ijsselmeer) is mixed to produce sustainable energy.
More tour information
The Water Tech Experience Bus will depart on Friday November 6th from the Rai exhibition center in Amsterdam at 8:30am. A complimentary breakfast is served in the bus and a lunch presentation is scheduled at the WaterCampus. You will return to Amsterdam by the end of the afternoon.
