At the end of 2009, several parties in the Northern Netherlands joined forces. The establishment of the Water Alliance foundation as a cluster and network organization further strengthened the development of WaterCampus in Leeuwarden. This initiative provided an important boost to the growth of business activity in Dutch water technology. Water Alliance emerged as a collaboration between the business community, knowledge institutions, and regional and national governments.
In the following years, Water Alliance built a solid national and international network and grew into a nationwide network and industry organization with over 200 members from across the Netherlands. In addition to the affiliated companies and organizations, Water Alliance closely collaborates with partners such as the Province of Fryslân, the Municipality of Leeuwarden, and TKI Water Technology. We also play an active role in various national and European programs.
Water Alliance & Envaqua
A significant chapter in the history of Water Alliance is the long-standing collaboration with Envaqua, the industry association for companies in environmental technology. For many years, both organizations have worked closely together on innovations and projects contributing to sustainable solutions for water and environmental challenges. This shared mission has led to the decision to officially merge.
As of January 1, 2025, Water Alliance and Envaqua will continue together under the name Water Alliance, creating a new national organization that connects companies, knowledge institutions, and governments in both water and environmental technology. This merger marks the next step in strengthening the Netherlands’ position as a global leader in water technology and sustainability.
Water Alliance is also participating in various national and European projects:
