The latest project of Water Alliance member Aquastill is to develop a solution for sustainable desalination of seawater for Buddy Dive Bonaire, using an innovative concept of membrane distillation powered by waste heat from generators.
Therefore Aquastill will install a membrane distillation unit at Buddy Dive Bonaire to provide potable water for this dive resort. The membrane distillation unit will use the waste heat from local diesel generators, saving electricity and lowering the carbon footprint of the desalination process.
The unit will produce up to 30 ton per day of potable water produced with waste heat from the generators. Electrical energy consumption is expected to be < 1 kWh/m3 produced. We expect to achieve the following sustainable result:
> 80% lower carbon footprint
> 50% lower fuel consumption
For this project Aquastill is cooperating with Bredenoord. Bredenoord has installed valves in the existing cooling systems of the engines. The valves enable heat being transferred to the Aquastill system.
The container with the membrane distillation unit has left at Aquastill BV. When it arrives the engineers of Buddy Dive and Aquastill will install and commission the membrane distillation unit. It will demonstrate the capabilities of membrane distillation for at least 18 months. During this time, we will monitor the performance and proof the concept of sustainable desalination and sustainability goals.
