The engineering of the world’s first full-scale plant for PHA production from process water has begun

Hoogezand – Paques Biomaterials and ESKA have signed a collaboration agreement with Envirochemie and Paques (both part of the Skion Water Group), as well as Jorritsma Bouw, to execute the engineering phase of the pioneering project Gecko, aimed at producing PHA from process water. This agreement includes comprehensive arrangements for both the engineering phase and the remaining stages of the project.

Today marked the official start of the engineering phase with a kick-off session involving all parties. The engineering process is expected to conclude in the third quarter of 2025, enabling an investment decision before the end of the year.

“This is a milestone project for Paques Biomaterials, as it represents the leap from scale-up to commercial scale,” said Joost Paques. “This full-scale plant demonstrates that we are fully operational.”

For ESKA, this project is equally significant. Brian Oost, Head of Operations – Solid Board Business Area, stated, “It’s fantastic to see this coming to fruition, as ESKA, together with these strong partners, realizes its sustainability ambitions.”
