From the vibrant city of Rimini, Italy, our Dutch Watertech delegation embarked on a working visit to Ecomondo 2024 – one of Europe’s largest trade fairs focused on the circular economy and sustainable technology. This event brought together international players, technology experts, and policymakers to share their knowledge and innovations around water management and environmental technology.
Day 1: Warming up in Rimini
Our colleagues took an early look around the heart of Rimini, kicking off the visit with an informal meet-and-greet on Monday. It was a relaxed warm-up, with the first connections made while soaking up the lively Italian atmosphere.
Day 2: Opening of the event
Tuesday marked a smooth start to the event. Ecomondo provides a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, and the opening created an ideal setting to initiate conversations and build relationships. The Dutch pavilion, organized by Daniela Colpani and Davide Tentori from the Dutch Embassy, became the central spot where our delegation connected with other professionals.
Day 3: A packed day of matchmaking and inspiring keynotes
Wednesday focused on matchmaking, organized by Isle Utilities. During the networking reception, opened by the Dutch Ambassador Willem van Ee, the emphasis was on international collaboration and knowledge sharing. Van Ee highlighted the importance of partnership and drew a meaningful connection to water technology by referencing his personal passion: rowing, a sport that symbolizes teamwork and synchronization.
During the session “The Future of Water: Governance and Innovation,” Steven van Rossum delivered an inspiring presentation on the shared water challenges between Italy and the Netherlands. He emphasized how innovation in the water sector can be accelerated through collaboration among universities, utilities, and businesses. Using impactful examples and best practices from the Dutch water technology sector, he illustrated how the Netherlands and Italy can strengthen each other through knowledge exchange and joint initiatives. Van Rossum skillfully translated theoretical ideas into concrete opportunities for cooperation, aiming to sustainably enhance water security and economic resilience in both countries. The session not only highlighted the urgency of these challenges but also provided a clear roadmap for collaborative action.
Challenges in Southern Italy: Puglia, the ‘Region Without Rain’
A particularly notable moment was the presentation on water challenges in Puglia, a region in southern Italy famously known as the “region without rain.” With his expertise in water loss and asset management, Ignaz Worm presented four innovative solutions to tackle water loss in this arid area.
Showcase of innovative water technologies by Dutch companies
In addition to the keynote sessions, several members of our delegation showcased their latest innovations. Danny Traksel from Royal HaskoningDHV shared insights into their work in southern Italy, while the Jotem team presented their new innovation, the “Blue Elephant” – a promising project aimed at improving efficiency in water use and management.
Looking ahead: Collaboration and new connections
Ecomondo 2024 was not only an opportunity to strengthen existing relationships but also to establish new connections and explore innovative ideas. The event underscored the importance of international collaboration in water management, giving our Dutch delegation the chance to share their knowledge and expertise as leaders in water technology and innovation on a global stage.
