Can you introduce yourself, how long have you been working for Water Alliance?
My name is Stefan Bergsma, and I have been working as an international business developer for Water Alliance. My journey here has been quite the adventure. I’ve been at this amazing organization for almost 4 years, but I took a small detour along the way. Turns out, that non-international work didn’t have my appeal, so I returned to Water Alliance.
What do you do at Water Alliance?
At Water Alliance, my role involves connecting Dutch water technology companies/members to business opportunities, partners, customers, and challenges abroad. I do this via missions, projects, events, matchmaking, and various other business development activities. I also maintain our extensive international network, particularly with other clusters and network organizations. Additionally, I am involved in the development and implementation of (EU) projects.
So Stefan, what makes Water Alliance distinctive?
Water Alliance stands out for its focus on business development for its members, unlike many other clusters or network organizations that have broader orientations. The entire WaterCampus, where Water Alliance is located, is distinctive in the world. We also focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) because the Dutch water technology sector primarily consists of such companies.
What do you like most about your profession?
What I like most is being in contact with people and organizations from different countries and cultures on a daily basis. It allows me to broaden my perspective and learn from diverse experiences.
Where do you want Water Alliance to be in five years?
In five years, I envision Water Alliance to maintain its reputation as the network organization for the Dutch water technology sector within the country, as well as internationally. I hope it becomes the go-to place/organization for the best and most innovative solutions to global water challenges.
Can you tell us something about your current schedule, a meeting, what are you looking forward to and why?
Last week we organized a digital session with the Water Tower, a network organization from the southern United States. We had six Dutch companies pitch to American engineering firms. The aim was to find potential local partners for Dutch water technology companies and introduce American engineering firms to the latest innovations, giving them the opportunity to incorporate these innovations into their portfolio.
Do you have any pro tips/inspirational insights?
One motto I live by is “What we do in life, echoes in eternity” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It may not work for everyone, but it resonates with me.
What is the latest book you read that impressed you and why?
The latest page-turner that left me fascinated is “Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, Knight’s Cross.” I’m a sucker for history books, and this one hit me hard. It offered a fresh perspective on World War II, shining a light on the untold stories. You know, the ones you don’t usually hear from (not the victorious Allies). It was a wake-up call, reminding me of the immense sacrifice and hopelessness of those times. History has a way of keeping us on our toes!
After hours: what do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, you’ll find me either on the soccer field or in the gym playing football. I also enjoy reading and traveling. Additionally, I recently became a father, so spending time with my family is something I greatly cherish.
