A small eight thousand Archimedes screws have been designed and manufactured by Water Alliance member Landustrie since 1916, but never a five meter diameter screw and with it the world’s largest screw. We are talking about a LANDY hydropower screw turbine for generating renewable energy in the English River Ouse, near York (North Yorkshire).
For this Linton Lock project Landustrie already delivered a three meter diameter screw in 2011. As the project has been completed to the full satisfaction of the customer, the extension with a second screw turbine has been awarded to Landustrie as well. Both screws are expected to generate about 1250 MWh per year, which is enough for about 300 households.
The photo shows the transport of the screw to a shot-blasting facility nearby. Final transport of the hydroscrew to England will take place by ship from Landustrie’s own quayside.
