PIB Programme Waste and Circular South Africa Launched

A cluster of Dutch companies signed a covenant with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on Thursday 18th of September in Amsterdam. Over the next three years, the group will position itself in the South African market for waste management and circularity. In doing so, the companies are responding to the ambitions of the South African government and local authorities, who are determined to tackle the challenges around waste in the coming years.

Launch in Amsterdam

The signing took place at BIN BIN GROUP in Amsterdam, an international supplier of flexible waste bins for the business market. Several other partners are bringing their expertise to the programme:

  • WAST-e: developing systems to optimise waste management, including an AI-powered recognition app and a smart weighing scale.
  • CEP (Amsterdam): focusing on communication and behavioural change around waste.
  • TNO: working on biomass conversion into biochar and plastics processing.
  • Sweco: contributing to future-proof waste management by optimising existing landfills and designing new sites with reuse and circular value chains in mind.

Partners and support

The Partners for International Business (PIB) programme is supported by the Dutch embassy network in South Africa and Rijkswaterstaat. Collaboration partners include Holland Circular Hotspot and the Water Alliance.

Opportunity to join

Additional Dutch companies are welcome to join – especially those active in:

  • Organic waste,
  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems, or
  • Waste-to-Energy solutions.

These themes are all high on the priority list of the South African authorities.
