NWTR produces 8200 m3 /day ultrapure water using the effluent of a Sewage Water Treatment plant as a source. The water is used for steam production at the oil field in Schoonebeek, the largest onshore oil field in North-western Europe.

The production plant uses advanced and technologies such as ultrafiltration and BODAC (biological active carbon filtration) as an innovative way to remove nutrients in order to avoid biofouling. BODAC also has been shown to remove drug residues very well. Due to the innovative design the use of chemicals and generation waste are very low.
