Students Open New Green Factory in Emmen

Today marks the official opening of the Caleyda Extraction Facility by Paques Biomaterials—an important step towards the future of green chemistry. This facility produces a natural alternative to plastic and demonstrates what is possible when knowledge, technology, and courage come together. The opening ceremony was carried out by Technasium students from Hondsrug College. They represent the next generation, building on what is being established here today. This gives them the opportunity not only to understand the technology but also to experience how collaboration and innovation can change the world.

New Green Chemistry Programme

Ahead of the opening, the students took part in an inspiring workshop. It was led by lecturer Marja Veurink from the new and closely related Green Chemistry degree programme at NHL Stenden, and by extraction expert Boudewijn Brandt from Paques Biomaterials. The students learned not only about biopolymers and the circular economy, but also about their own role in the transition to a green future.

Building a Circular Future Together

For years, the municipality of Emmen has been working with businesses, schools, and knowledge institutions to develop a strong network for green chemistry. With a forward-looking vision, Emmen is taking bold steps to promote the transition to circular plastics. Councillor Guido Rink commented: “This collaboration is a wonderful example of how we’re shaping the future in Emmen. By actively involving young people, we make sustainability tangible and real.”

Bold Cooperation: This Is Not a Solo Journey

That’s exactly why Paques Biomaterials chose this location. “There is a well-established network here that supports the scaling up of our company,” says Joost Paques, CEO and founder of Paques Biomaterials. One of the company’s core values is bold cooperation, because the circular economy can only succeed through collaboration. All of this takes place at the Getec Park Emmen, which is committed to sustainable entrepreneurship and production.
