Greywater Recycling for a Sustainable Shower Experience
Schiltach, March 2025.
Two years ago, the Hansgrohe Group’s Green Vision bathroom concept attracted significant attention. A frequently asked question was when this futuristic bathroom—designed to reduce water and energy consumption by up to 90 percent—would be available on the market.
“We see our Green Vision as an inspiring invitation to rethink our daily water usage and develop solutions that help conserve resources,” says Hans Jürgen Kalmbach, CEO of the Hansgrohe Group. “Together with Hydraloop, we are now taking an important step toward realizing this vision. At ISH 2025, visitors can experience their advanced greywater recycling solution live at our booth.”
In the Green Vision bathroom, shower water was already being reused to flush toilets. Building on this concept, the Hansgrohe Group is now partnering with the award-winning Dutch scale-up Hydraloop to introduce an advanced greywater recycling system. Hansgrohe has a long tradition in sustainable water management, having previously offered greywater recycling systems under the Pontos brand from 2003 to 2011. Pontos was a pioneering solution for efficient water reuse. Now, with Hydraloop’s advanced technology, Hansgrohe takes the next step in greywater recycling by integrating modern innovations such as IoT connectivity, minimal maintenance, and enhanced system efficiency.
Smart Water Reuse with Advanced Technology
The compact, cabinet-sized treatment system collects wastewater from showers, bathtubs, washing machines, and condensate from heat pumps, air conditioning systems, and dryers—commonly known as greywater. It then purifies and disinfects it through an innovative biological process, making it reusable for applications such as toilet flushing, garden irrigation, and washing machines.
“Finding the right balance between user experience, efficiency, resource conservation, and regulatory compliance is a challenge. More and more sustainable building certifications require projects to meet sustainability criteria to obtain building permits,” explains Hans Jürgen Kalmbach. “We believe this effective and reliable solution unlocks the potential of greywater recycling at exactly the right time—especially for hotels, public and semi-public buildings, and other construction projects with a strong focus on sustainability. In addition, we also advocate for increased water reuse at a political level. Circular solutions in buildings, where water of varying quality is used for different purposes, offer tremendous opportunities. To seize these opportunities, regulatory frameworks must be adjusted to enable innovation.”
Collaboration as an Innovation and Market Accelerator
Expanding horizons—a principle embraced by company founder Hans Grohe himself. By collaborating with innovative and dynamic partners, the Hansgrohe Group drives the development and rapid market introduction of groundbreaking water technologies. This strengthens the company’s innovative power and positions it as a pioneer in sustainable solutions, actively contributing to the fight against the water and energy crisis.
“We are entering innovative and sustainable product segments. In the Sustainable Living section of our ISH exhibition booth, we will provide a preview of these developments,” says Hans Jürgen Kalmbach. “We will present innovative technologies for water recycling, heat recovery, and drinking water optimization, helping to reduce our ecological footprint in daily life.”
Showering is about much more than just physical hygiene—it is also a moment of mental refreshment. To ensure that this experience of well-being does not come at the expense of valuable resources, we combine innovative water-saving technologies with systemic solutions. Our partnership with Hydraloop is an example of this: we are rethinking water usage in a sustainable way without compromising on design and comfort.
