EWB Circular Rain contributes to climate-resilient and circular sports fields in Amsterdam and Haarlem

Water Alliance member EWB Circular Rain – also part of the Expert Group on Circular Water – is proud to be part of the winning Antea Sport consortium, which has been selected by the municipalities of Amsterdam and Haarlem for the large-scale replacement of synthetic turf fields over the next ten years. In total, approximately 270 fields will be renewed, with a strong focus on climate adaptation and circular solutions.

Smart rainwater management

EWB Circular Rain brings innovative techniques for rainwater buffering and reuse. With systems like the RainShell and Schelpenbron, purified rainwater is stored underground, offering protection against drought, salinisation and flooding. These techniques use minimal materials and make smart use of the deep subsurface, in collaboration with partners such as Bronbemaling.com.

From proven pilot to scalable standard

Within this long-term programme, RainShell and Schelpenbron are applied as proven techniques. In parallel, EWB Circular Rain is further developing RainShell into a market-ready, repeatable and scalable solution for use under synthetic turf fields. This work builds on earlier pilot experiences within the Scale-Up programme and is combined with additional smart technologies such as StopUP.

Why this project fits EWB Circular Rain

“This is not just about replacing artificial turf,” says EWB Circular Rain. “The municipalities have placed climate resilience and circularity at the heart of their ambitions – and that’s exactly where we can make an impact.”
