Successful BIOCAS Mineralization trial in municipality of Leeuwarden

In 2019, the Municipality of Leeuwarden and Water Alliance member Rinagro started a new project with regard to an experiment with roadside grass. The aim is to investigate after composting whether the weeds germinate again and whether the compost can be used as fertilizer. Finally, an investigation is carried out into possible losses during this process.

After the treatment of the roadside grass with Compost-O®, this product was then distributed in 2020. On plot 1, the composted roadside grass without seed from field thistles and knight sorrel was spread and on plot 3, the composted roadside grass with seeds of field thistle and horse sorrel was spread. The second, middle plot has not been treated to avoid cross-contamination. The plots have now been mowed and this part of the trial has been successful, because no field thistles and knight sorrel have developed on these plots. In 2021, this is still the case.

This trial shows that roadside grass treated with Compost-O® can be used well as fertilizer. The results of the municipality’s “De Groene Ster” project have been well assessed: Dense sod and a nice, even turf. Livestock farmers and arable farmers receive composted roadside grass that is litter-free, in accordance with an agreement with the municipality. It is a popular product, because the analysis of the leachate water shows that there is no loss of nitrogen. The energy has remained in the product!
